The German Mercedes cars can trace their origins to Karl Benz, who in 1885 produced the world’s first motorized carriage for use on the road. Since then they have maintained a superb reputation for quality, and frequently for the highest technology, too. Benz’s greatest rival in the early days was another German, Gottlieb Daimler, whose cars, which would be given the name Mercedes after the daughter of sales director Emil Jellinek, soon outstripped the Benz products technologically. The naturally conservative Karl Benz was stung into action, and until the First World War the rival marques Mercedes (still produced by the parent firm Daimler) and Benz struggled for supremacy. Mercedes’ crowning glory was a fantastic overhead-camshaft Grand Prix machine of 1914 which led to a revolution in engine design.
