Rodarte, the high fashion clothing line founded by sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy, continues to push the envelope with its extraordinary, “out-of-the-box” designs. The Rodarte Spring/Summer 2011 collection however, is more commercial but still maintains eccentric and feminine characteristics. Already with a high-profile following such as Michelle Obama, Natalie Portman, Keira Knightley, and Cate Blanchett, the Rodarte Spring/Summer 2011 collection runway show at the NYC Mercedes Benz Fashion Week was highly anticipated. The Rodarte Spring/Summer 2011 collection runway show started around noon at 548 West 22nd Street on the sixth day of the NYC Mercedes Benz Fashion Week (September 14th). The Doors’ song “The End” resonated throughout the runway show. Kate and Laura Mulleavy were inspired by the Northern California Redwood Forest, and the barrettes, t-strap platforms, and structured silhouettes paid tribute to the woodsy dais. There was also a Chinese Ming interlude where models in vase shaped dresses strutted down the runway, as well as a Roman gladiator afterthought with models in powerful dresses composed of gleaming, gold fabrics.

During the Spring 2010 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, well over 100 designers and fashion labels got the chance to strut their stuff and show off their new lines for the upcoming season. That is a lot of fashion to take in, and even to fashion slaves, it would be hard to keep up. I followed the progression very closely, getting in every moment I could. Mercedes Benz is hosting Fashion Week in New York City this week and Vivienne Tam is represented here with her spring 2010 collection. Her collection is definitely about color and butterfly prints. It started around 8 p.m. on the last day of the NYC Mercedes Benz Fashion Week (September 16th). Models strutted down the catwalk to Gwen Stefani’s energizing reggae mix, including MIA’s “Paper Planes,” MGMT’s “Kids,” and songs by Estelle, Sean Paul, and Santogold.
